“Can We Praise God Now?”

by Dave Auker

What is praise? If you ask Siri on an iPhone the definition is: express warm approval or admiration of. I would add gratitude, respect, appreciation, and thanks.

Praise in the book of Psalm is often directed at God. Consider all that God has done and is doing for us, what could be more natural than outbursts of praise?

We should praise God for what He does – His creation, His blessing, His forgiveness, His direction, and even His corrections. We should also praise God for who He is – loving, just, faithful, kind and patient.

There are times, especially today, when we need to share our praise with others and encourage them to also praise the Lord.

Today I want to focus on Psalm 146. Have you ever needed help? Sometimes I need help lifting something, getting something, or understanding something. Sometimes I need help with advice or counsel. Psalm 146 compares the help of man versus the help of God. Help from man is good, it is needed, but man’s help is temporal and can be unstable. However, help from God is lasting and complete.

Psalm 146 is a great Psalm of praise.

Verses 1-2 state we should praise the Lord as long as we live – all of our lives, every day. There are times when we do not feel like praising the Lord but we should always praise Him daily for what He has done and will do!

What does praise do?

  1. Praise shifts our minds from our problems, concerns, and shortcomings to focus on the Lord.
  2. Praise causes us to consider and appreciate God’s character.
  3. Praise lifts our perspective from an earthly mindset to a heavenly mindset.

Verses 3-5 state we must put our trust in the Lord. The Lord is our hope, our strength. We are blessed when our hope is in the Lord. Putting our trust in man is a false hope. Man cannot deliver us. Keep in mind that we are God’s instruments to be a help here on earth. We need to help and be concerned for the spiritual and physical well being of those around us, family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and strangers. However, we need to express to others that eternal help and hope is found only in the Lord.

Verses 9-10 state that God will remain faithful! He will reign forever! He is always in control no matter the circumstances, no matter what we are facing.

Maybe today you don’t feel like praising anything. Maybe today you feel overwhelmed with circumstances. Maybe today you do not feel well or you have many concerns on your heart. I urge you today to put your hope in the Lord who loves you. Put your hope in a Savior who loves you so much He gave His life for you (John 3:16). Put your hope in a Savior who lives today and wants to give you an abundant life (John 10:10).

Put your trust in Almighty God. Look to God in times of need, His help is everlasting and complete.

Praise His name!
